Kavaratti: Lakshadweep the smallest Union Territory of India joins with the Nation in celebrating its 66th Independence Day with greatenthusiasm and nationalistic fervour on15thAugust.In the morning Administrator, Shri Amar Nath unfurled the NationalTricolour at Stadium Ground Kavaratti amidst a multitude of people from all walks of life including senior officers and employees of the Administration, Panchayat functionaries, students, women and children. In his Independence Day address Administrator Shri. Amar Nath extended his heartiest Independence Day greetings to the people and recalled the contributions of the freedom fighters and martyrs who laid down their lives for our Independence and paid homage to the patriots and martyrs. Administrator Shri. Amar Nath highlighted the major achievements and developments of the Territory and future plan and programmes aimed by the Lakshadweep Administration and Government of India for the over all development including major sectors like Shipping, Public Works, Education, Fisheries, Tourism etc.
The total plan allocation of Govt. of India is Rs.903 crore in the current financial year. For the better connectivity of the territory the Administrator announced that the construction of the two 400 passenger ships cum 250MT Cargo Ships is in progress and both the ships are likely to be delivered by the end of the next year. A 2000 LPG cylinder carrier and oil Barge of capacity of 150MT is expected to be delivered within this year. Approval for two numbers of 800 MTmultipurpose cargo Vessels also granted by Govt of India. Dedicated
berth at Kochi is likely to commence operation from September 2012. Administration has also plans to construct dedicated berths at Beypore and Mangalore.
To provide excellent infrastructure for the students and youth of the territory, the administration started constructing Indoor Sports Hall and Health cum Fitness Centre in all the Islands. A sports hostel at Andrott Island also proposes to establish very soon, Administrator said.Shri.Amar Nath congratulated the nine civil service swimmers who gotnine medals in national competition and honoured them with awards and certificates. The Panchayat Yuva Krida Evam Khel Abhiyan (PYKKA) has already started in Lakshadweep. The sports and youth affairs propose to organise UT level sports competitions in February 2013.The Administration is committed to develop Tourism in general by creating more job opportunities to the Island youth. Administration has already established Lakshadweep Diving Academy to promote Lakshadweep a unique dive destination and to train local youths in scuba diving. As new venture Administration planning to start tent based high quality temporary accommodation for tourists which will provide additional occupancy with eco-friendly and sync with nature.
Under Hunar Se Rozgar Scheme of govt. of India the Administration is sending 32 youths for training in food production and food beverage service.
The third phase construction work of Transit Accommodation at Cochin and Agatti are progressing and the guest houses at Kozhikode and Mangalore are also under construction. Administration with the help of National Institute of Ocean Technology will establish Desalination Plants in six Island at a cost of 99 Crores. Administration plans to provide 100% renewable energy in Lakshadweep. Taking steps in that direction 3000 solar laterns have been provided for distribution and around 750 solar street lights have been installed.The progress of Rajiv Gandhi Speciality Hospital at Agatti is remarkable and provided quality health care within the islands. The Administration plans to construct LPG Godown in all the islands before March 2013.
The coastal security will be enhanced with the deployment of 92 constables who have been trained from Kerala Police Academy at Trichur. The Lakshadweep Cooperative Marketing Federation has procured about 3300MT Copra worth Rs 17 Crores in the year 2011-12. Integrated Island Management Plan for all the islands are under preparation in association with Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS), Thiruvananthapuram. The campaign for 100% e-literate is being launched. Administrator exhorted that it is our joined endeavour to carry forward the process of development for future generations while creating an environment of harmony, peace and consensus. Administrator appealed to the people to take pledge to work dedicatedly honestly and with common bold of making this territory as the most ideal territory in the country After the ceremonial function at stadium ground, Administrator inaugurated Career Guidance and Counselling Centre, new Aganwadi Centre, new aternity and Child Health block of Indira Gandhi Hospital, workshop of agriculture, e-literary campaign and Lakshadweep
Grievance Management System and laid foundation stone for StateCentral Library.
